Thing 10: Podcasts

The podcast I chose to listen to was called ‘The Impact of Covid-19 on Disabled People.’

I chose this podcast as I have experienced through work, what the impact may be. The role podcasts play can play is to give views and opinions on a chosen topic. Podcasts can also include surveys and results to back up these views.

This podcast is a conversation between Michael McEwan and Bill Scott (Director of Policy at Inclusion Scotlandabout the results of their Covid-19 evidence survey.

Podcasts can support learning and practice as they give information and views on a specific topic. Podcasts are a good way to listen on-the-go to gain more information easily.

I found this podcast interesting as It was informative in the plans that Inclusion Scotland have when working with the government. For example, a hotline to has been set up, to get help for people who have a Learning Disability and are shielding get food bought and delivered. I was not aware of this service.

They also spoke about the plans to communicate effectively with people who have a Learning Disability effectively as they are aware that not everyone has access to podcasts. Bill Scott spoke about getting a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter on news to ensure those who have hearing issues care able to understand. He then went on to talk about the struggle that they have had with this as film crews would pan between the Interpreter and Nicola Sturgeon. Thus, not allowing people to fully benefit from the Sign Language communication.

I found the podcast informative as it included the results of a survey that was completed regarding if people with Learning Disabilities were getting enough support. They found that people had experienced reduced or withdrawn hours since start of COVID-19. I find this upsetting as no-one deserves to have reduced hours at a time of need, especially as people might not be able to access shops on their own without the support of a Support Worker. Bill went on to say the response from this survey the ‘’Government told local authorities that the government has made extra money available for additional social care if necessary’’.
