Thing 17: Open Educational Resources

From watching the video attached to this ‘thing’ I learned that OER stands for Open Educational Resources. I am now aware of how the SSSC is working with OER and how I can access the files. I had a look at the file linked and noticed that the information available to share and amend is the same as the information for the 23digital website information. I have learned that if you use an OER you must give credit to the SSSC and provide a link whilst indicating any changes you made.

I had a go at researching OER’s relevant to my role on the OER Commons website. This was really easy to use and I was able to find information that I could refer to in practice.

The idea behind OER is a practical way of sharing and retrieving information that you can use in a work setting. I could use these resources to support my practice as if I am unsure of something I can look to see if there is any existing information I can use then adapt to suit my service. This supports my practice as I have easy access to information that can easily be shared with others to improve my/our knowledge as a team.

Current limitations of using OER are that not all information is available as an OER document at present, work is being done to make as many as possible available, but currently there may not be recourses available for every topic.

Some people may oppose this approach to learning as, information can is presented as Power Points or pdfs. This means a lot of ‘text’ and not a very ‘visual’ way of learning. This will not suit everyone.
