Thing 3: Why Digital?

Thing 3: Why Digital?

“In a digital world, the expectations of social service employers, the workforce and the people who use social services are changing. It’s becoming more and more important that the workforce is suitably equipped by developing its digital capabilities.” (  - SSSC Website)

The above statement could not be more true in 2020 –2021. More and more people/workplaces are using digital programmes to communicate.

The infographic produced by Skills for Care represents my experience well as a member of the social services workforce in Scotland as I agree with most of the points on there, I am aware that even members of my own team will have very different views to me on technology.

I have completed self-assessment scoresheet to establish my own views of digital capabilities, how confident feel in applying them and If I feel they are relevant to my role. I feel I am confident in the use of digital programmes and software within my Job role. I have the capability to figure out a new programme or create documents. I feel I have grown up in an age where technology was constantly developing and even through school, I was expected to be able to work different types of technology with little or no previous experience. I feel that this skill I have developed has been relevant throughout my career as I am able to quickly learn how to work digitally and it comes easy to me. I have saw how hard this has been to some of my colleagues who aren't used to working on a computer or participating in ‘zoom’ calls. I grew up with MSN - I don’t think it could get any worse!

Reflecting on the difference between my learning and your practice I realise how interlinked they both are, to learn more I have completed various courses online, I then use what I have learned by applying this to my practice. It motivates me to continue to take part in different courses and develop my digital capabilities so I can feel confident in my job role.

I feel that be part of a digitally capable workforce can help to improve the lives of people who use services as we are able to effectively communicate and use the tools we have available to strengthen our workforce. When we feel confident, we can use these tools to communicate directly with people who use the service!

Hannah.
