Thing 4: A Digital Footprint
Anything from watching a video on YouTube, posting a comment on Instagram or using google maps! It is all considered to be part of a digital footprint – and we all have one...
Digital footprints could have implications for EVERYONE! Whether you work in a clothing store, in care or in a supermarket.
A digital footprint means that an employer can easily search for your name in google and see results relating to you, good or bad! This could result in an employer thinking you are not suitable for a certain job role due to things you have posted or been ‘tagged’ in if they feel they are inappropriate.
The task for today’s 23Things Digital was to ‘Google yourself’. I done just that and surprisingly found the second result returned was linked to me. I was reminded quite quickly of my time in school, when I wanted to become a photographer and had made a Facebook page for all of my photos (which I had since forgotten about). I enjoyed looking back through these memories, but was surprised that something from 8 years ago was still so high up the results list. I was also made aware an article from 11 years ago thanking me for volunteering with a charity. I had no idea this even existed! Google images shows lots of photos of a pipe band I played in through school.
It was interesting to see how many results related to myself and what they consisted of. It makes me think about what I should and should not post online.
After reading ‘8 Tips to Effectively Manage Your Digital Footprint’ and learning about different ways to manage my digital footprint I have made sure that my profiles on social media are private and deleted any old accounts that I felt did not need to be there anymore, alongside as on my phone and laptop that I do not use. I will take note of the other tips that were shown and check regularly that these are all in place.
I feel that after researching more into my Digital Footprint, I am confident that I know what information is visible to future employers, and what is still out there can support me and show my personality – in a good way! I have found it interesting to see what is visible and learning tips on how to control that.
