Thing 7: Finding Resources

Google is a fantastic way to find information, but not everything on google is reliable, there's lots of other options out there to find trustworthy information. I found this badge interesting as although I had previously registered for a Social Service Knowledge Scotland (SSKS) account, I hadn’t really used it. When having a look, I was impressed at the vast range in topics available to me.   

A topic I am interested in is Supporting people with Learning Disabilities, and to test the website I wanted to narrow down the articles that I wanted to read. So, I searched for ‘Learning Disabilities and Coronavirus’ this brought up a list of articles etc. from around the world in response to my search. I was impressed with how easy it was to find the information.  


I found a resource titled ‘Experiences of children with special educational needs and disabilities and their families in the United Kingdom during the coronavirus pandemic’. I found this article interesting as it is a topic I feel strongly about, I was interested in the figures and findings of this article. I was easy to find an article on the SSKS website that was relevant to the exact topic I was looking for. I like that the document also has references available that I can search for to find other relevant articles.  

 

When completing this ‘23Thing’ Badge I tried to use the advance search on google I came across another article that I found interesting on the same topic, ‘Impact of Covid-19 on People with a Learning Disability in Scotland ‘narrowed this search down to only results from the ‘United Kingdom, in English and in the last 24 Hours. This is a really good feature as you can find some of the most recent information when using this method.  


To reflect I found both sites a useful in finding relevant information., I found the SSKS website particularly good as the information there comes from a reliable source whereas google might not be as reliable. I found google easier to work. I thought it was good that both sites showed different results so I had more articles to choose from. I will definitely use these resources in the future to find information.

Thing 21: Digital Legacy

  I know I have missed thing 20! It's coming, just not today..  Before completing this ‘thing (21)’ I had not thought anything about the concept of a digital legacy.    After reading the article  Our Digital Afterlife  ( Journal of the Law Society of Scotland , 2015) and watching the following video, produced by the   Digital Legacy Association .  I have mixed views on ‘Facebook's Legacy Contact’ I feel this is a great feature as after you have passed away someone can have control of your account, and the account can still be viewed because it would be a shame to lose all of the pictures and posts of the person as this can act as a way of comfort when grieving. Its been a while....

Dear Future me... Its been a while, 2 years in fact! Since my last post so many things have changed.  “It’s only after you’ve stepped outside your comfort zone that you begin to change, grow, and transform.” ―  Roy T. Bennett I most definitely have stepped outside my comfort zone, I left my role as a support worker with the local council,  and took a step into the education sector, giving myself new challenges, and many new development opportunities!  I was soo nervous, in my role as support worker, i felt confident, like i knew exactly what i was supposed to be doing. Moving into this role as a Tutor/Assessor with a college, where i have no experience and a lot to learn!  It has been a fantastic year in this role, i have learned soo much - with thanks to my new colleagues and team.  I am looking forward to continuing this grown and developing further - and plan to (hopefully) use this blog to record this for my future self.  Dear Future me.....

Thing 18: Social Media #2

Through completing this ‘thing  ‘I  feel like I have been able to see how the organisation and the SSSC use Social media and the pros and cons of its use.     I have read the link :  Social Care Meets Social Media: What’s Holding the Sector Back ? And I have researched what social media platforms the organisation I work for uses. The organisation I work for only uses Facebook. ( https://www.facebook.com/sbcouncil ) I  could not find a twitter page or any other social media platforms. The information on the Facebook page is updated daily with relevant posts for the whole local Authority Area. This is a positive use of Facebook as up to date information is on the page and easy to find. I have saw this information being shared by Facebook friends also so it is easy to share and inform others. I think that twitter is another large platform for sharing information, and I am surprised that the organisation does not have an account. I feel this would be benef...
